Batman: Dance of Death

Episode One Outline

DAY​ ​

INT: Wayne Manor / Living Room

Bruce Wayne and Jezebel Jet share a bottle of wine in front of a fire. Jez brings up their 6-month anniversary. Jez is further down the road than Bruce. He tells her he’d like to keep their relationship secret, for the time being. Jez reminds him of a lunch commitment at the Gotham University Museum tomorrow. Alfred informs Bruce that he is needed “downstairs”. Bruce insists he has to leave. Jez is upset, but understands.

INT: Batcave

Alfred alerts Bruce to an incident at the Gotham City Courthouse. A possible hostage situation. Alfred asks how things are going with Jez. Bruce is non-committal. Alfred tells Bruce he deserves to be happy. Bruce insists Alfred should take some of his own advice.

EXT: Gotham City Courthouse / Ground

Judge Fremont Harkness is standing on the edge of the roof, a noose around his neck, looking down. He is in full court dress - black robe and an elaborate powdered wig. A crowd had formed below. He’s being held hostage by a bunch of armed goons. A public execution? Batman meets Gordon in an alleyway. Gordon: “No demands yet. Don’t let anything happen to him, Batman. He’s the only thing keeping this city together.”

EXT: Gotham City Courthouse / Roof

Batman kicks some goon ass. He tells Judge Harkness he can go home. Nothing. Batman tries to persuade Harkness to step back from the ledge. Harkness screams a confession from the rooftop - the many prostitutes he’s hired and physically abused. Eventually, Harkness jumps from the roof and twitches above the stunned crowd. The white wig lands at Batman’s feet. Inside, he finds a chip and skin-conductance electrodes. Using his wrist computer, he finds out the chip is a short-range receiver. Batman uses his drone to scan the building for the transmitter and finds a room below with more goons. He descends through window and kicks some goon ass, but a mysterious figure in a hat escapes.

DAY​ ​

INT: Batcave

Bruce describes the judge’s demeanor on the roof last night. Alfred talks about the terrible burden that living two lives must be, living “in the shadows.” Alfred appeals to Bruce to take a break from the Batsuit. Alfred tells Bruce he has a date that evening. Alfred runs tests on the receiver from the wig.

INT: Gotham University Museum

Huge donors buffet lunch/drinks to celebrate the opening of the Danse Macabre exhibition that Jez curated. Large oil paintings (think Brueghel the Elder and Hieronymous Bosch) adorn the walls. Jez tells Bruce she’s booked dinner for two at the exclusive Bacchanal for their anniversary dinner tonight. Jez notices Jervis Tetch, the world-renowned fashion designer. She tells Bruce about Tetch’s salacious past - a series of active statutory rape charges. Only savvy representation has kept him out of prison.

INT: Gotham University Museum Cont’d

Jez gives a speech about the collection - how timely the exhibition is in light of the death of Judge Harkness, Jez: “A chilling reminder that death can come for all of us, at any time. We can but hope that we have made peace with ourselves when he does.” She is interrupted by Tetch, Tetch: “Isn’t the opposite also true, Ms. Jet? That we should enjoy every delight whenever the mood takes us? He mentions Jez’s affiliation with the Black Glove. Bruce steps in and calls Tetch a hypocrite. Tetch confronts Bruce about the kind of delights a billionaire playboy must indulge in. Tetch alludes to Bruce’s relationship with Jez and to his “secret” life. Bruce carefully negotiates the discussion. Bruce receives a text from Alfred - he has information about the transmitter from the wig.

INT: Batcave

Alfred tells Bruce he was able to optimize the transmitter and has picked up a new signal. They track the signal to Old Gotham’s Garment District. Bruce becomes Batman.

INT: Warehouse in Gotham Garment District

Batman kicks some goon ass and collects clues about the device in Judge Harkness’ wig. He determines that it’s a mind control device, similar to those used by the Mad Hatter. He hurries to Bacchanal to meet Jez.

INT: Bacchanal Restaurant

Bruce and Jez notice Judge Faden celebrating his birthday. Bruce & Jez offer congratulations and commiserations. Faden: “I won’t be spooked into hiding.” Bruce and Jez sit down to dinner. Bruce is agitated and asks about the Black Glove. Suddenly, an oversized birthday cake is wheeled into the room with music and revelers. Party hats are placed on Faden and his guests. As “For he’s a jolly good fellow” crescendos, Mad Hatter bursts out of the cake and goons pour in through the door. Hatter wishes Judge Faden a happy birthday and asks for a speech. Faden confesses to the corruption he’s taken part in during his tenure - the bribes he’s accepted, guilty criminals he’s let free, etc. The room is stunned into silence.

INT: Bacchanal Restaurant Cont’d

Bruce explains to Jez that he’s going to call for help (become Batman). Jez insists that he stay. Bruce must decide whether to leave or not.

(IF LEAVE) EXT: Bacchanal Restaurant / Roof

Batman’s drone drops the Batsuit onto the roof of the restaurant. He tries to contact Alfred, but there’s no answer. Batman drops in through the skylight. 

(IF STAY) INT: Bacchanal Restaurant

Bruce tries to contact Alfred. No luck. Hatter’s goons are stealing jewelry and wallets at gunpoint. One of them rips Jez’s necklace off.

INT: Bacchanal Restaurant

Batman/Bruce kicks some goon ass. Hatter holds a large kitchen knife to Faden’s throat. They debate whether Judge Faden should live or die. Suddenly, Alfred calls Batman’s earpiece. He tells Batman/Bruce that his date was a trap. Hatter’s goons have a gun to his head. He must tell Hatter to execute Faden. If he refuses, Alfred will be killed. Batman/Bruce must decide who lives and who dies. If he chooses to kill Faden, the judge is decapitated and Alfred is kidnapped. If he saves Faden, he hears a gunshot and the connection goes dead. Faden is taken hostage by Hatter.
